According to Elton John, "Without Bernie, basically there wouldn't have been an Elton John. I mean, that stroke of good fortune and kismet as it were, Elton John probably wouldn't have happened. I'm just a purveyor of Bernie's feelings Bernie's thoughts." Taupin's lyrics arrived at Liberty Records' and the rest is history.

But equally there is another artist in him, the one with the brushes and paints who creates emotive canvases. Ranging from abstract blocks and oblongs of tantalizing hues to cryptic social commentary captured in multi-media form his works are rich in color and emotion.

Britto / Perlo-Berry Show Success!

Off The Wall Gallery's motivation for the Berry/ Britto event was not only to raise funds and awareness but to raise The Berry Children's spirits. Art promotes healing and so we attempted to have two childrens workshops with world renowned artist, Romero Britto. He connected with the children as an artist, teacher, and humanitarian. The children mimicked his work using Britto coloring books , crayons and color markers. There was sheer delight in the gallery as the kids gave it their all and the parents proudly looked on. Everyone went home with their own creations as well as a juice box and a cookie. With all that being said thanks to the parents and children who made it out to the event.

The artist reception that evening for Romero Britto was a huge success. Lots of new faces as well as some old ones. Special thanks for those who have been coming to our events for years, we appreciate you all so much. We were overwhelmed with the amount of people wanting to be a part of the event, there was standing room only as clients tried to pay for their coveted artworks and waited patiently for Romero to dedicate the artwork. Brasserie 19 was a very gracious sponsor who made the wait so much more pleasant by feeding the crowds. We were fortunate enough to be selling everything from original artwork and limited editions to books, and gift items. The Mezuzah's and scarves were sold out before the evening was over.The gallery is working on filling all back orders and personalizations this week. Thank you for supporting us and The Berry Children from the bottom of our hearts <3.

Perlo-Berry/ Britto Event!

This is going to be a special event for the Show Your Hearts, the organization benefitting the children of Joshua and Robin Berry, whose lives were taken suddenly as a result of a tragic automobile accident. Raised by her father, a photographer, she became familiar with the art of photography, and she escaped seeing the world in a standard point of view. She gained the power to create her own world through different mediums of art, and presents to us mixed media peices of her interpertation of the natural world.

On the second week of October Off the Wall Gallery will be having a Belle Epoque show.

Bell Epoque is French for "beautiful era", this marked a time in European social history, that took place in the late 19th century.

A Night with Hadasah & Chagall

This past Thursday Off the Wall Gallery held a private event for the Hadasah group! With some goodies from central market, we welcomed a Hadasah for their Wine & Cheese reception. They were graced by a private viewing of Chagall's work, and Off the Wall Gallery's very own, Mimi & and Paula as their hostesses. Chagall peices are now out on the floor for the public, so make sure to stop by and visit our gallery to take a glimpse at Chagall peices . Also, thank you Hadasah for gracing us with your presence, and making it a great time.

Artist Spotlight: Peter Mars

We are proud to carry the work of Peter Mars.

Born in Portland, Oregon in 1959, Peter Mars began collecting art at an early age: matchbooks, comic books, baseball cards, arrowheads, and coins. This love of design, imagery, and memorabilia has found it's way deep into his work. While at school in New Orleans, Mars was touched by an Alexander Calder print; moved by the broad, flat, sweeping strokes of color he knew he needed to learn that process.

Now Mars lives in Chicago where he has been a working artist for over 20 years. Combining avant-garde innovation with a deep Pop Art sensibility, Mars fuses and confuses the traditional distinctions between high culture and low art. The artist's sensibilities fall somewhere between Dada and Pop, "In that area where nonsense and pop culture so frequently meet." It is clear, Mars is as vibrant and fun as his artwork.

Artist Spotlight: Bruno Zupan

Recently Off the Wall has started carrying the work of artist, Bruno Zupan.

Bruno Zupan was born in Slovenia in 1939. He graduated from the Art Institute in Zagreb and decided at the age of twenty-three to leave home and continue his education in Paris. In 1964 he left Paris for New York where he began a series of one-man exhibitions of his work in American museums and galleries.

Although Zupan is a citizen of the United States, he has not abandoned his desire to explore other parts of the world. He has painted the vibrant colors of Mexico, has returned annually to Paris and Venice, and has established his main studios in the village of Valldemossa on the island of Mallorca. Many of his subjects are found just beyond his door. He greatly enjoys an anti-urban Mediterranean lifestyle which gives free reign to his desire to glorify the everyday things which have given pleasure to Homer, Byron, Sargent, and Chopin...sunlight on a broken column, the perfume of almond blossom, the wet wind of spring or the smell of the sea. He is part and product of this immortal seasonal flux, and he wants his paintings to be messages from a place of rest and renewal.

This past week Mimi and Linda have been spending time in Russia. It's amazing how infused their society is with art and history, from the religious murals to the wonderful architecture.

Here are a few shots from the trip; among them: Peterhof's Palace (where the Tzars went to relax), The Kremlin (the historic center of Moscow), and the whole city in preparation for Russian Day (Similar to Russian Independence - June 12th). Enjoy!!

Transocean Commission, it was an honor

Recently we were given the honor of working on a project for Transocean. When the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in April, 11 Transocean employees lost their lives. Off The Wall was asked to create a unique piece honoring these men and the work that they did. Eleven bronze hard hats were designed and crafted, one for each family.

These pieces were recently used at the memorial service honoring the victims of this tragedy.

To the Transocean Families,

We at Off the Wall Gallery want to express our most profound pride and humility at having been chosen to be a part of the effort to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that fateful day, April 20th, 2010, off the coast of Louisiana. We hope that this tribute in bronze in some way helps family and friends to honor their lost fathers, sons and co-workers. Our heartfelt prayers are with you all.

Alexandra is probably best known as a child prodigy, first painting like Picasso at the young age of 7. However, as she matured into a young woman, Alexandra Nechita knew she must use her gift to promote peace throughout the world. Her diligence to this calling can clearly be seen through her vast accomplishments as an artist. One project in particular, she dedicated a 16-foot tall bronze sculpture entitled, "Let There be Peace", to the people of Singapore. This is one of seven monuments she will dedicate in the name of peace, one for each continent. Now a recent graduate of UCLA's fine art progam, Nechita strives to maximize her artistic expression to bring peace to the world.

The mark of a true artist, she is constantly pushing herself to learn new skills and mediums with which to express her visions. Known for her vibrant large-scale paintings, Nechita’s development has forced her to explore sculpture through the mediums of glass, bronze, and painted aluminum. The latter, aluminum “cut-out” sculpture, was born out of Nechita’s struggle between painting and sculpting and her goal to take art out of the gallery and into the public arena. “I believe that public art empowers urban geography, the city and the people who live there. These animated, bright colors and creatures are meant to surprise and entertain the passer by and hopefully evoke some kind of emotional response,” remarks Nechita. The artist also recently installed a 13-foot bronze sculpture at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Singapore, on which she worked for three years. Her plans to adorn cityscapes throughout the world with the “cut-out” and bronze sculptures will generate these pieces for years to come or, “as long as my hands, brain and heart hold out,” adds Nechita.

Another aspect of Nechita’s sculpture are her recent, blown glass works. These pieces were the artist’s solution to connecting with her audience in a tactile manner. Recognizing that audiences wanted to touch her paintings, she created art that is interactive, sensual, with no edges or end, to create a connective experience. Describes Nechita, “These sculptures are lyrical and graceful. The transparent and opaque forms transfer into shadows on the wall to create a never-ending experience."

These new sculpture mediums as well as, oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and lithographs will all be at the show next Sat. 22nd and Sun. 23rd, in addition to Alexandra herself!

So we have decided to start a blog to keep our collectors updated on what's happening at the gallery!

First's things first: We moved. It will have been two years in August, but it still feels like yesterday to us. We moved into an expansive gallery, located adjacent to Neiman Marcus, and we now have a private entrance facing Post Oak Blvd. So we are now located at:
